Supporting a young person through crisis and trauma can be complex, but with the right support in place, it can also lead to powerful and lasting change. This case study shares the story of Safiya*, a 21‑year‑old young woman who experienced abuse within the home, ongoing health challenges, and sudden homelessness following eviction.

Through timely referral, access to safe accommodation

, and ongoing holistic support at Southend YMCA, Safiya has been able to regain stability, rebuild her confidence, and begin a journey of growth and resilience. With a secure environment, trusted relationships, and opportunities to develop life skills, Safiya is now moving forward with greater independence and self‑belief.

Background: Life Before Southend YMCA

Safiya arrived in the UK from The Gambia at the age of 10 and lived with her father and step‑mother. Home, however, did not feel safe. Over time, Safiya experienced ongoing physical and emotional abuse, alongside periods of neglect. These experiences had a lasting impact on her wellbeing, confidence, and sense of security.

At 18, Safiya made the courageous decision to leave home and try to build an independent life. She moved into a rented property and worked to support herself. During this time, Safiya’s health began to deteriorate. She experienced persistent dizziness and other physical difficulties, which made it increasingly difficult to maintain consistent work. As her income became unstable, she fell behind on rent payments and was eventually evicted.

The eviction left Safiya feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn. Suddenly without a home, she faced increased vulnerability and risk at an already fragile time.

Finding Safety and Support

Following her eviction, Safiya accessed emergency accommodation with HARP for a short period. While this provided immediate safety, staff recognised that she needed a more stable, longer‑term solution with wraparound support. HARP referred Safiya to Southend YMCA, where she accepted a placement and moved into Southend YMCA's Newlands Supported Accommodation.

From the outset, Safiya was clear about what she needed most: a safe place where she could feel settled, recover from instability, and begin rebuilding trust and confidence after years of uncertainty.

Supporting the Journey

At Southend YMCA, Safiya was welcomed into a safe and positive living environment, providing her with a stable base to begin rebuilding her life. Staff worked closely with her to establish routines, offer emotional reassurance, and support her with day‑to‑day challenges as she adjusted to her new surroundings.

Safiya was encouraged to take part in purposeful activities that supported both her wellbeing and independence. She engaged in cooking sessions, helping her develop practical life skills, confidence, and routine. She also participated in arts and crafts activities, which gave her creative outlets to express herself, manage stress, and explore new interests in a supportive setting.

Staff are available daily for informal check‑ins and practical support, alongside regular planned sessions to reflect on progress, respond to emerging needs, and plan next steps towards independent living. These consistent, trusting relationships have played a key role in helping Safiya feel safe, heard, and supported.

The Change: Rebuilding Confidence and Independence

Since moving into Southend YMCA accommodation, Safiya reports feeling significantly safer and more settled. With stability in place, she has begun to rebuild her confidence and self‑esteem. She engages more openly with staff, participates in activities, and is developing practical skills that support her journey towards independence.

Having time and space to recover from trauma has allowed Safiya to start looking forward again. Supported by a nurturing environment and trusted adults, she is gradually developing a stronger sense of self‑belief and resilience.

“Support here has helped me become more confident and helped me feel safe.”

"There is a large variety of support that has helped me explore new hobbies and access help in ways that suit me. Staff are kind and they help me work towards being independent and confident.”

Safiya’s journey is ongoing, but the foundation has been laid. With continued support, stable accommodation, and opportunities to build skills and confidence, Safiya is moving forward with renewed hope. Her story highlights the powerful impact that safe housing, compassionate relationships, and holistic support can have in helping young people recover from trauma and begin building brighter, more independent futures.
