Supporting a young person through crisis and trauma can be complex, but it can also lead to powerful and lasting change when the right support is in place. This case study tells the story of Sam*, a young person who experienced domestic conflict, sudden displacement, and emotional distress following a traumatic incident at home. Through timely intervention, safe accommodation, and ongoing holistic support at Southend YMCA, Sam was able to regain stability, rebuild his confidence, and begin a journey of growth and resilience. With access to a safe environment, trusted relationships, and opportunities to develop life skills, Sam has been supported to move forward with greater independence and self‑belief.

Sam’s relationship with his dad changed dramatically after a frightening incident at home. What started as an argument quickly escalated, and his dad ended up shouting at him and physically hurting him. Shocked and scared, Sam made the difficult decision to leave the house. He reached out to a friend first, hoping for support, but they could not help. Feeling alone and unsure where to go, he walked into a nearby bistro just to be somewhere safe for a moment. From there, he contacted the police and called his mum to explain what had happened.

His stepdad came to meet him and took him straight to the hospital so he could be checked over. Even though he did not have serious injuries, the experience had clearly shaken him. The police asked Sam to give a statement so they could understand exactly what had happened. After hearing his account, they issued a warrant for his dad’s arrest. Officers then accompanied Sam back home so he could collect some essentials without feeling unsafe. For the time being, he went to stay with his great‑nan, who offered him a calm and comforting place to land.

After a short period with her, Sam moved into HARP for six weeks, where he began to settle and regain a sense of stability. When a space became available, he moved into the YMCA, where he could continue rebuilding his life at his own pace.

Supporting the Journey: Throughout everything, Sam has been clear about one thing: he needed somewhere safe where he could breathe again. A place to rediscover who he is, to feel grounded, and to start healing from what he went through. Having that stability has given him the space to reflect, grow, and slowly rebuild his confidence.

After the situation, he was offered the Southend YMCA and another supported accommodation. He received confirmation from the YMCA first and accepted placement. He was sign posted by the police to get emergency housing.

Southend YMCA provided Sam with a safe and positive living environment at Newlands Supported Accommodation, where he was supported to develop essential life skills and plan towards independent living. To encourage positive and meaningful social engagement, Southend YMCA also offered a range of clubs and activities, enabling Sam to explore his interests and build practical skills. These included cooking sessions, music as a form of therapeutic expression, and creative activities such as arts and crafts.

Southend YMCA has worked consistently with Sam for over three years, providing daily support to help him maintain stability and continue developing his independence. This support has been delivered through regular engagement with staff, with additional assistance from on‑site concierge and security staff to ensure his safety and wellbeing.

The Change

  • Sam has built confidence and improved his self‑esteem.

  • He has accessed new opportunities to develop practical and personal skills.

  • He has learned to take responsibility and manage aspects of his life more independently.

Overall, Sam has shown significant and sustained progress. Through regular interaction with staff and engagement in support, he has continued to develop his skills, confidence, and independence.
