All In Music: 10 Questions With... Sarah-Jane Kirby

August 7, 2019

Welcome to the latest installment of our blog feature, '10 Questions With...', where we'll be asking young people who have recently taken part in All In Music sessions and projects to provide an insight into their success story: a bit about them, what they got out of our project and what they'll be going on to do in the future.

Next up we have young singer, Sarah-Jane Kirby:

Q.1 - Who are you and what do you play?

My name is Sarah-Jane Kirby from Southend. I’m 15 years old and I sing.

Q.2 - What’s your favourite thing about music?

I enjoying singing because it makes me happy and it’s probably the thing that I do the most.

Q.3 - What musical experience did you have before coming to 'All In Music'?

I was part of my school choir, St. Mary’s, when I was much younger. I took part in an event called “Young Voices” which lead me to have the chance to perform three times at The O2 in London with the choir.

Q.4 - What have you enjoyed or learned so far during your music sessions at All-in-Music?

I have learned about dynamics in a song, breathing and microphone technique and have generally improved my singing ability.

Q.5 - What genres and types of music do you like/listen to?

80s music, Pop and R&B.

Q.6 - Who are your musical inspirations?

Demi Lovato, Christina Perri and Callum Scott. I have been singing through all their songs here.

Q.7 - Apart from our music sessions, what else have you been a part of with the Southend YMCA?

Team YP, where I have taken part in activities like Laser Tag, Pottery and Go Karting.

Q.8 - What has been your biggest achievement so far with 'All In Music'?

Singing at the Palace Theatre for “Southend Makes Music”, where I performed “Jar Of Hearts” by Christina Perri. It was the first time I had ever sung in front of an audience on my own.

Q.9 - How has being a part of 'All In Music' changed you personally?

I have gained a lot confidence during my music session through my singing. I never used to sing as much as I do now.

Q.10 - What’s next for you?

I am going to record some songs at the All-In-Music studio with the tutors. After I have finished my sessions I am going to look at other things locally to do with singing.
