The Apprentice (Day 3, France)

Monday morning, an early uprising, breakfast looked like something not too dissimilar from a scene in Night of the Living Dead.

The schedule said we’d be exploring the town of Agon-Countainville – the perfect opportunity for a spot of sightseeing, but we hadn’t got away with it that easily!
 

Like an episode from The Apprentice we were handed challenges in groups (aptly named The Fantastic Five, Team Fringlish, Eyes of the Tiger & The Golden All Stars) before being set on our way.
 

Challenges included being given an item that had to be exchanged 10 times with locals for other items, detailing the essential survival list for Agon-Countainville, interviewing passers by about the area and having a list of items that had to be found on an itinerary.
 

Trying to break down the language barrier was difficult when you can only really ask ‘Parlez vous Anglais?’ – let alone ‘can we interview you’ or ‘swap an item with you ‘and trying to explain we’re on a cultural exchange!

When we reviewed the challenge with the other teams the French participants explained that they had deliberately taken a bit of ‘back-seat’ to enable us to try to communicate and add to the tasks complications.

Returning to base for lunch, it was my turn to cook alongside Tilly, Jacob & Jade. It’s quite a big task to prepare for 25 people! Even a ploughman’s buffet style lunch, followed by a red fruit salad and homemade cream! (It’s even more difficult when you empty the contents of a full sink over the kitchen floor…)

We cleared up from lunch. Over the back of CORE there’s a hippodrome racetrack and we had prime seats to watch some chariot racing.

In the afternoon we had to present the findings from the morning task, in whatever which way we decided. We had two very entertaining presentations about the itinerary of items to be found and the item exchange, a spoken presentation about the essential survival list.

My group decided to take a slightly different approach! We re-enacted the interviews with those we had spoken to (with props as well!), lifeguards, shop workers and passers by.

The menu for dinner was Lasagna, which took a bit longer than expected, as we hadn’t accounted for a slow oven.

With full stomachs we ventured back to the town to enjoy each other’s company over a quiet drink, and a film (with French subtitles) and an early night – as it was to be an early start the next day…

Lundi matin, un leve tot, le petit-dejeuner n’avait pas l’air trop similaire de la scene dans “night of the living dead”.
 

Le planning disait qu’on allait explorer la ville d’Agon-Coutainville - la parfaite occasion pour une vue d’ensemble, mais nous ne sommes pas parti si facilement!

Comme dans un episode de “the apprentice” nous avons recu des challenges a faire en groupe (respectivement appeles les 5 fantastiques, l’equipe Fringlish, Eyes of the tiger et les Golden all stars) avant d’etre envoye a accomplir notre mission.
 

Les challenges incluaient de se voir donner un objet qui devait etre echange 10 fois contre autre chose, avec des habitants, lister les essentiels pour survivre a Agon-Coutainville, interroger des passants sur l’endroit et avoir une liste d’objets qui devaient avoir ete trouves selon un itineraire.

Essayer de briser les barriers de la langue etait difficile quand la seule chose que tu sqis demqnder est “Parlez-vous anglais?” – laissant de cote “ pouvons-nous vous questioner?” ou “echanger un objet avec vous” et expliquer qu’on fait parti d’un echange culturel!
 

De retour a la base pour le dejeuner, c’etait mon tour de cuisiner avec Tilly, Jacob tet Jade. C’est une tache assez importante quand il faut cuisiner pour 25 personnes! Meme un buffet de charcuterie, suivit par une salade de fruits rouges avec de la crème! (C’est encore plus difficile lorsque tu vides le contenu d’un evier sur le sol de la cuisine…). On a nettoye au dejeuner. A l’arriere de CORE il y a un hippodrome de course de chevaux et nous avions des sieges de premiere classe pour regarder la course.
 

Durant l’apres-midi nous devions faire une presentation sur nos trouvailles du matin, par la maniere qu’on avait choisi. Nous avons eu deux presentations assez divertissantes a propos de l’itineraire a effectuer pour trouver des objets et celui des objets a echanger, et une presentation orale sur comment survivre a Agon-Coutainville.
 

Mon groupe a decide de prendre une approche differente! On a re-joue les entretiens qu’on a eu durant la journee (avec accessories!), sauveteur en mer, vendeurs et passants.
 

Le menu pour le dinner etait lasagnes, qui a pris plus longtemps que prevu, comme nous n’avions pa prevu d’avoir un four lent.
 

Avec des estomacs remplis nous sommes alles en ville pour apprecier la compagnie des uns et des autres autour de quelques verres, et un film (avec sous-titres francais) et un couche tot – comme si c’etait parce qu’on avait un commencement assez tot le lendemain…
