Setting up your own environmentally friendly business can be challenging enough, but in a tough economic climate, and little experience, success can be even harder to achieve.  With the help of Southend-on-Sea YMCA, young disadvantaged entrepreneurs will be given a fighting chance, thanks to the conversion of a dilapidated building into a brand new eco-hub facility providing affordable workspace, meeting rooms and conference facilities.  The old St. John’s Stables in Westcliff-on-Sea have been transformed into the new eco-hub, which will provide vital support to help fledgling businesses during a crucial stage in their development.

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) have praised the eco-hub project and the work we are doing for the community...

"Projects such as this are helping the EU to become a smart, eu_flagsustainable and inclusive economy by 2020, as set out in the EU 2020 growth strategy. The EU is facing some tough challenges, including an ageing population, an insufficiently qualified workforce, the need for greater innovation, striking a balance between economic growth and environmental degradation, and ensuring secure, clean energy supplies. Regional policy projects across the EU are playing an active role in dealing with these and many other challenges, by undertaking projects designed to generate employment, raise educational achievement, develop renewable energy sources, boost productivity and give all citizens access to opportunities. The projects and the regions play a pivotal role in this, as they generate real results that contribute to achieving the strategy's key goals.

The award-winning transformation of a former stables block in a deprived area, offers young disadvantaged eco-entrepreneurs a place to develop their ideas and take their businesses forward. To date, seven businesses have occupied the spaces available, well above initial expectations."

Paul_ScottOn Thursday 25th August Southend YMCA's Eco Hub held its first Business Enterprise Exchange meeting, attended by local entrepreneurs and business owners.

Environmental Sustainability Business Manager, Paul Scott, led the meeting explaining the format for this and future gatherings at the Eco Hub.

'It's an informal gathering for young businesses to give them a chance to meet likeminded people in similar situations to enable them to exchange skills, contacts, ideas and advice to help them grow their businesses' Paul Scott.

At the meeting Richard Kurti & Bev Doyle (based in Westcliff-on-Sea) spoke to those in attendance about their journey as television & film script writers (including work for BBC, ITV & Sky) and the problems they had faced up until now.

Future meetings will also take an informal format with individuals being given the chance to lead meetings or suggest topics that can be put forward for discussion.

The Eco-Hub wants to help young businesses with training needs and affordable space to hold meetings in a professional environment, virtual businesses and hot desking opportunities, providing additional support and facilities.
