Intro (previously Switch 2 Music) is funded by Youth Music and is a musically inclusive programme which nurtures the musical, personal and social development of young people living in challenging circumstances, furthering their creativity, technical proficiency and personal growth.
Our team consists of multi-instrumentalists and qualified technicians and producers - all active performers - so we can make sure our participants get the skills, support and opportunities they need. As well as being professionals in their craft, our staff are trained to mentor young people and we can offer advice and support beyond their musical tuition.
Our music programme at Southend YMCA offers FREE music tuition, composition advice, rehearsal and recording facilities, band development, performance experience and lyric writing classes for young people who are at risk of exclusion, not in education, employment or training or experiencing other difficulties in their lives. Whatever style of music our young people are into - from rap and dance, to pop and rock, to classical and jazz - Southend YMCA can encourage and nurture their musical interests and skills. For those interested in the technical side of audio, we can offer tuition in production, audio engineering, DJing, and Ableton Live performance.
We tailor our sessions to best suit the needs of our individual students, offering both one-to-one tuition and mentoring as well as group work, which gives them the opportunity to meet, play and perform with other participants.
Intro holds showcases throughout the year at local music venues with performances from current music students. Some past performances include Village Green, Leigh Folk Festival, the Cliffs Pavilion, Peggie Sue's, The Railway and the Westcliff Hotel, as well as civic events such as showcases for the Mayor, church Christmas concerts, and the YMCA England Youth Awards in London.
To find out about future showcases keep checking back to Southend YMCA's upcoming events and look out for social media updates.
Studio based recording projects include a Christmas album featuring Intro and Youthspace students alongside local schools and choirs, and regularly documenting the performance work that goes on within the studio.

Besides our tuition for individual students, we can also supply a music provision for other institutions and local services, as well as offer outreach taster sessions. Our studio is also available to hire for rehearsal and recording purposes.
